Try it in your browser
A simulated preview on a sample subdivision. Start with Project Control: one control drawing tiles the project, and Build Set or Update creates every discipline’s drawings from it. Or pick a layout type: plan and profile, plan/plan, plan duplicate, plan sheets placed by alignment, array, path or free placement, or a set drawn by hand to adopt. Build it, change something, and watch only what the change touched get redone. Every walkthrough is also written out below, step by step.
“Try it in your browser” does not mean SheetAgent runs online. SheetAgent for Civil 3D is a desktop plugin that runs inside Civil 3D on your own Windows machine, on your drawings and your standards. This page is a simulation that mimics what you will experience there, on a sample drawing. Nothing is installed, and what you do in the preview stays in your browser.
The preview needs JavaScript. It runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. To see SheetAgent for Civil 3D on your own drawings instead, start the 30-day trial or book a demo.
The walkthroughs, step by step
Each one runs on the same sample drawing: two streets, First Street with a profile view and Second Street as a loop, 52 lots, existing ground and an existing road. The numbers below are what the preview produces with its default choices.
Project Control: one control drawing, every discipline’s drawings
- Make the drawing a Project Control drawing. Press Project Control and choose Single VP for the whole project. The drawing becomes a Single VP Project Control drawing, preview only: BUILD is disabled there, and sheets are built in the discipline drawings.
- Author the master tiling. Create Preview fills the site boundary with 10 tiles at 1:40. Their labels stay blank until numbering is assigned; this is the tiling every discipline inherits.
- Assign Disciplines. Four disciplines, each with its own prefix: Demolition (C1), Erosion Control (C2), Grading (C3) and Layout (C4), at 4 sheets per file. The Will number column previews the result as you type: C1-01..04 | C1-05..08 | C1-09..10. A prefix used twice is flagged and Apply stays disabled. Apply + Render numbers the tiles and gives each file group its own colour.
- Build Set or Update. Its table lists, per discipline, the files, the sheets, the first drawing name and the status. Build creates 16 drawings, all enrolled in one sheet set: for each discipline, three drawings holding 4, 4 and 2 sheets (DEMOLITION_PLAN-1.dwg holds C1-01 to C1-04) and an index drawing with its KEY PLAN sheet (Demolition_Indx_C1-00.dwg). Each discipline shows its own layers on the same sheets, and a sheet at a file boundary names its neighbour in the next drawing: C1-04 reads SEE C1-05.
- Change the tiling and update. Rotate tile C1-02 in the control drawing. Build Set or Update reports Needs update (3 of 4) for every discipline, backs each drawing up before updating it, updates 12 drawings and skips the 4 the change did not touch. Sheets renumber but files never rename.

Multi VP: Plan and Profile
- Set up. Plan and Profile runs on First Street, the street with a profile view. The setup dialog follows the plugin’s: sheet identity, coverage, layout at H 1:20 and V 1:4, spacing in paper units, direction and stations.
- Preview. 4 plan tiles along First Street, STA 0+00 TO STA 16+66.9.
- Scale Check. At V 1:4 the profile is taller than its viewport. Choose a smaller vertical scale, or keep 1:4 and split the profile vertically: 8 views on 4 sheets with 4 seams, each segment on its own datum, previewed in cyan before you accept.
- Build Sheets. 4 layouts, C4-01 to C4-04, each with its plan viewport, a profile viewport on its own split view, match lines, a key map, a north arrow, a scale bar and the title block filled in.
- A design change. First Street is revised between STA 4+90 and STA 11+50. Health flags C4-02 and C4-03, Update Tiles moves them, and Update Sheets updates those two sheets and skips C4-01 and C4-04.

Multi VP: Plan/Plan
- Pattern. Path, Alignment or Free; here Alignment, on First Street.
- Preview and build. 4 tiles, two to a sheet, at 1:20: 2 layouts, C4-01 and C4-02, each with two plan viewports in series. A match line names the view and the sheet, as in SEE VIEW B SHEET C4-01.
- A design change. Health flags C4-01 B and C4-02 A; Update Tiles and Update Sheets bring both sheets current.
Multi VP: Plan Duplicate
- Pattern. Path, Alignment or Free; here Alignment, on First Street.
- Build. 4 tiles, each shown twice: 4 layouts, C4-01 to C4-04, with the exact same view in both viewports, titled EXISTING and PROPOSED.
- Layer states. Each viewport then gets its own layer state, for existing against proposed.

Single VP: Alignment placement
- Preview. Pick First Street. With the Sheet Naming defaults, 4 tiles at 1:20 cover STA 0+00 TO STA 16+66.9, fewer stations through the curve and more along the straight.
- Build Sheets. 5 layouts: the C3-00 overview at 1" = 150’ and C3-01 to C3-04 at 1" = 20’, with match lines labelled with the station and the neighbouring sheet.
- A design change. First Street is revised between STA 4+90 and STA 11+50. Health flags C3-02 and C3-03; after Update Tiles, Update Sheets updates the overview, C3-02 and C3-03, and skips C3-01 and C3-04.
Single VP: Array placement
- Preview. Pick the site boundary. At 1:50, 7 tiles fill it, numbered from the top left in rows; the start corner and Rows or Snake are yours to choose.
- Build Sheets. The C3-00 overview and C3-01 to C3-07, with a match line wherever two tiles overlap.
- A change. Rotate C3-02 by 30 degrees. Update Sheets updates C3-02, the overview, and the match lines on C3-03 and C3-05, and skips the other four.
Single VP: Path placement
- Preview. Pick the polyline along the existing road: 4 tiles at 1:20, STA 0+00 TO STA 16+24.71 along it.
- Build Sheets. The C3-00 overview and C3-01 to C3-04.
- A change. Rotate C3-02. Update Sheets updates it and the overview, and skips C3-01, C3-03 and C3-04.
Single VP: Free placement
- Place. Choose Single or Multiple. The sheet preview follows the cursor and each click drops a tile; Enter, Esc, a right click or Done placing ends it.
- Build Sheets. A layout per tile, with a match line wherever two tiles overlap.
- A change. Move or rotate a tile: Update Sheets redoes that sheet and the match lines on its neighbours, and skips the rest.

Adopt Existing Layouts
- A set drawn by hand. The drawing gets a cover sheet, C1-00, and plan sheets C1-01 to C1-04, each with a viewport, a title block, a north arrow and a scale bar, but no tiles, no key map and no match lines.
- Adopt. The scan finds the title block, north arrow, scale bar and attribute block on a reference layout, matches C1-01 to C1-04 and skips the cover sheet. Apply ties a tile to every adopted viewport.
- Make it a SheetAgent set. Add a key map: it goes onto every adopted sheet with that sheet’s tile hatched (in the plugin you specify its location once, with Set Key Map Area on the template). Rotate a tile, and Update Sheets turns that sheet with it.
What is real and what is imitated
The buttons, the setup dialogs and the Health messages use the same names and choices as the product, so what you learn here carries over. The palette shows only what the walkthrough runs; Show full palette, at its foot, lays out every control the plugin has, for a look. The plugin looks different. In Project Control the discipline drawings exist only in this page: nothing is written to disk. The drawing is a sample subdivision from Setline’s own demo files. The tile placement, the sheets and the updates are worked out by this page, not by SheetAgent for Civil 3D, so treat the result as an illustration of the workflow rather than of the plugin’s exact output.
Left out of the preview: moving a seam and Vertical Split Finetuning; Add Tile and Layout Adjustment; a Multi VP Project Control drawing, Define Regions and sectors; Sheet Set Manager sync and publishing; your own title block and layer standards; and plotting. Every button is documented in the project manual; the update loop is explained in keeping sheets current after design changes.
